General Description
An Upper GI and Small Bowel Study is a series of x-rays that is used to investigate different problems with the esophagus, stomach and small intestine.
What to Expect
After drinking barium, several x-rays of your stomach will be taken. This portion of the test should take approximately one hour. Immediately afterward, the small bowel will be studied. X-rays will be taken every 15 minutes until the barium has traveled the entire length of your intestine. After the study, increase your fluid intake for a few days to rid your GI tract of the remaining barium. Your doctor will receive a written report approximately 48 hours after the study.
- Do not eat or drink after midnight before appointment.
- Continue to take any medications you normally would with a minimal amount of water.
- If you are a diabetic, then please bring food and/or medications that you need during this time.
- Please arrive 10 minutes before your appointment and bring the requisition provided by your physician.
