General Description
A Gastric Empty Study is an x-ray that uses a special camera to take pictures of the stomach after a small amount of a radioactive substance makes it visible. (The level of radioactivity is extremely low and has no side effects.) The study helps detect abnormalities related to the emptying of the stomach.

What to Expect
At the beginning of the test, you will be given eggs and toast to eat with a small amount of radioactive tracer and 6 - 8 oz. of water. Immediately after you finish eating, you will lie on your back on a padded table with a camera positioned above you. Images will be taken every 20 minutes for two hours. Your doctor will receive a written report approximately 48 hours after the study.

How to Prepare

  1. The study will be performed in the morning because gastric emptying time varies with the time of day. Please don't eat or drink after midnight before the study.
  2. If you must take medication, then use only a small amount of water.
  3. Please arrive 10 minutes before your appointment and bring the requisition provided by your physician.
